Collection Historical Note

Warren Mattice Anderson was born on October 16, 1915, in Bainbridge, New York, the son of Floyd E. Anderson (1891–1976), later a State Senator and Supreme Court Justice, and Edna Madeline (Mattice) Anderson (born 1889).

Anderson graduated from Colgate University in 1937, and from Albany Law School in 1940. After graduating from Albany Law, he served as Assistant County Attorney for Broome County, New York. He served in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Following the war he joined the Binghamton law firm of Hinman, Howard & Kattell.

In 1952, he was elected to a State Senate seat that had been held by his father, Floyd E. Anderson, who became a State Supreme Court justice. A Republican, Anderson was a member of the New York State Senate from 1953 to 1989. During his 36 years in the State Senate, from 1953 to 1988, Mr. Anderson worked with six governors, from Thomas E. Dewey to Mario M. Cuomo, and was the majority leader for 16 years. Anderson served in the Senate's top post until 1989, when he re-joined the law firm of Hinman, Howard & Kattell, in Binghamton, New York.

Anderson died in Johnson City, New York, at the age of 91 on June 1, 2007. Interstate 81, which runs from the Southern Tier of New York to the Capital District, was named in his honor.
